Aromatherapy Crafts For Children
May 26, 2016Can you imagine giving your child a craft activity to do that could actually calm them down too? I came across these aromatherapy crafts for children, and thought what a brilliant idea it was. I’ll be making these paints and cloud dough for sure and wanted to share them with you too!
Aromatherapy Cloud Dough
- 1/2 vegetable oil or other cooking oil
- 5 drops essential oil
- 6-8 drops food coloring
- 4 cups flour
Mix vegetable oil, essential oil and food coloring together in a glass bowl until thoroughly combined. Place flour in a play bin, add the oil mixture, and smoosh together until fully combined (go on, get your hands in there!).
Cloud dough should keep in an airtight container for up to a week.
Calming oils to include would be lavender, ylang ylang or Roman chamomile. More energizing ones might be wild orange or peppermint.
Essential Oil-Scented Finger Paints
- 2 cups cold water
- 1 heaping tablespoon corn starch
- Plastic bottles
- Food coloring
- Essential oils
Whisk together cold water and cornstarch in a medium size pot, then heat over medium heat until mixture thickens. Remove from heat and let cool. Pour the mixture into plastic bottles, adding a different food coloring to each bottle, stirring with a bamboo or wood skewer until desired color is reached.
Add one drop of essential oil to each bottle of paint, stirring in with bamboo skewer. Each color might have a different essential oil for a diverse sensory experience, and you can even match the paint – lemon in the yellow, lavender in purple, orange in orange and peppermint in the green!
Cap the lids and your paint is all ready!
These are fun projects to do with your kiddos. Obviously, you want to take care to use oils that are safe for kids such as the ones mentioned above, never using such strong oils as wintergreen, or even blends that are not designed for internal use (because we all know that kids put everything in their mouths!).
Happy crafting!!
