Soothing After Sun Lotion

self care tips Jul 28, 2016

Since it’s the middle of summer, and many of us (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) are spending a lot of time outdoors, it is good to have some tools on hand to help offset the effects of the sun. Of course, nothing substitutes for a good quality sunscreen (I like the Environmental Working Group’s summary of the best, least toxic brands), but this soothing after sun lotion can be a lovely, relieving cream to apply at the end of the day. It is soothing, cooling and healing.

Here’s the recipe:-

Soothing After Sun Lotion

Ingredients:

1/2 tablespoon grated beeswax

1 tablespoon shea butter

2 tablespoons virgin coconut oil

4 tablespoons aloe vera gel

10 drops Lavender essential oil

10 drops Peppermint essential oil

5 drops Roman Chamomile essential oil

Directions:

  • Add grated beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil to glass jar.
  • Place in saucepan with 1-2 inches of boiling water.
  • Stir ingredients until melted and remove from heat.
  • Add aloe vera gel and essential oils, stir until combined.
  • Pour into container and let rest 2-3 hours before use.

This concoction blends the healing power of aloe with soothing lavender, and cooling peppermint. Shea butter and coconut oil are also very soothing and healing. This blend is safe for the kiddos, but equally effective for the grown ups, and takes just a small amount of time to make. You could also add Frankincense and Myrrh essential oils too, as an option for greater healing effect. Drink lots of water with lemon oil in it and lather this lotion on for the best rehydration effect.
